This week at Nursery (week beginning 6.10.2025), we are learning about the following things:
Literacy
We are starting to look at a new story- The Train Ride. You can watch it with your child here: The Train Ride by June Crebbin, illustrated by Stephen Lambert
On Monday we will be listening to the story and making sure we can sit and listen to it. The children are working on sitting on their bottoms with their legs crossed.
On Tuesday we will re-read the story and talk about the characters, particularly focussing on the girl, Mum and Grandma. The children will link this to talk about who is in their family.
On Wednesday we will talk about our own families and who lives in our house. The children will draw pictures of who lives with them and try to label their picture.
On Thursday we will move our focus to our rhyme of the week which is Jack and Jill.
Finally on Friday we will continue to practise writing our names.
Maths
For our maths learning this week, we will be starting to explore patterns. Our vocabulary is:
Repeat
Pattern
Rhythm
Over the week, we will be using songs and stories to look at repeats that occur. We will then progress to looking at simple patterns using colour and attempt to create our own repeats. We will also use our construction equipment to build roads and towers using the same type of blocks.
The story and rhymes that we will use to support our learning are:
The Little Red Hen
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Polly Put the Kettle On
The Grand Old Duke of York
Our song of the week for maths is: Shapes song for kids | The Singing Walrus - YouTube
Phonics
In phonics we continue to work on Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds. We will complete a range of activities that support children in hearing bigger sounds from a range of areas- environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, body percussion, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration and voice sounds.
Listening to these big sounds will help the children to differentiate between smaller sounds once we start learning individual letter sounds. When you're doing things around the house, or out and about, please talk to your children about what they can hear or the noises that things make as you do them.
If you have any queries about our learning, please do speak to a member of the team.
