Nursery
Welcome to Nursery!
In Nursery our staff are Miss Allan (class teacher), Miss McGuinness, Mrs Kaur and Miss Dutta (teaching assistants). Mrs Chatterjee will teach Nursery every Friday.
If you wish to contact us for any reason, you can reach Miss Allan by email at:
Nursery@stmarys.slough.sch.uk
If your child is absent for any reason, please log this on Studybugs.
Do not communicate with Miss Allan on Class Dojo as she will not respond. All communication with Miss Allan must be done via the class email address. Thank you.
Notice- when bringing your child to Nursery, do not park in front of the school car park gates. Access is needed at all times by staff, deliveries and visitors to the school.
If you do wish to drive to Nursery, you can find alternative free parking at Upton Court Park and then walk around to St Mary's. This would be an approximately 15 minute walk.
Thank you.
This week at Nursery (week beginning 17.11.2025), we are learning about the following things:
Literacy
Over this week we will be looking at the story 'The Tiger who came to tea'. The children will be trying to talk about the story and starting to think about how the story is ordered.
On Monday we are introducing the story and talking about a tiger coming into the home. The children will be listening to the story and talking about the choices the tiger made. You can watch the story with your child here: The Tiger Who Came To Tea - YouTube
On Tuesday we will recap our prior learning. We will listen to the story again as a class and then we will look at images to identify the start, middle and end of the story. The children will be using the images and their knowledge of the story to do this.
On Wednesday we will recap our literacy learning from this week. We will listen to the story again and then we will talk about the story to retell it. The children will then draw their favourite part of the story in the books.
On Thursday we will recap our learning from earlier in the week and then we will revisit writing our names. The children will continue to work on writing the letters of their name and practising using capital and lower case letters.
Finally on Friday we will be recapping our learning from the rest of the week and looking at our rhyme of the week I'm a little teapot. With Mrs Chatterjee the children will sing the song and any actions that go with it. They will also be using a Mr Tumble song to support- you can see that here: CBeebies: Something Special - I'm a Little Tea Pot - Nursery Rhyme
Maths
In Maths we are looking at position and shape. The children will be using the key vocabulary:
In
Out
Into
Position
Shape
Big
Small
Next to
Beside
Round
Flat
Curved
Point
On Monday we will be talking about position and the position of ourselves. Our key words for this lesson are in and out. The children will sing the Hokey Cokey and practice using the words in and out to move their body to begin their understanding.
On Tuesday we will be arranging blocks into positions. We will watch the story 'The Duck in the Truck' and look at the position of the truck throughout the story. You can watch it with your child here: Duck in the Truck | Classic Story | Children’s Book Read Aloud | Audiobook | Bedtime Reading During play they will be using resources to build a road and retell the story with cars.
On Wednesday we will look at the size of objects and talk about what we can fit into different containers. We will be using a large box and a smaller box to think about how objects can fit into them and talk about why some objects will fit in one box, but not the other.
On Thursday we will look at a range of objects and identify when they are the same shape. The children will be using the vocabulary flat, curved, round and pointy to try and describe the objects they can see. The children will use this vocabulary to help them match shapes they can see.
Finally on Friday the children will be looking at a range of objects and continuing to use the language flat, curved, round and pointy. They will be talking about the shapes they can see and thinking how real world objects do have shapes.
Our song of the week is Counting to 10- Count to 10 Chant | Learn Numbers 1 to 10 | Learn Counting Numbers | Fun Kids English
Phonics
In phonics we continue to work on Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds. We will complete a range of activities that support children in hearing bigger sounds from a range of areas- environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, body percussion, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration and voice sounds.
Listening to these big sounds will help the children to differentiate between smaller sounds once we start learning individual letter sounds. When you're doing things around the house, or out and about, please talk to your children about what they can hear or the noises that things make as you do them.
If you would like to play any games that will support your child, please follow the link: PhonicsPlay - Phase 1 Resources
The website also has a good page with ways you can further support your child with phonics at home: PhonicsPlay - Pre-school children
If you have any queries about our learning, please do speak to a member of the team.
