Nursery

Welcome to Nursery!

In Nursery our staff are Miss Allan (class teacher),  Miss McGuinness, Mrs Kaur and Miss Dutta (teaching assistants). Mrs Chatterjee will teach Nursery every Friday.

If you wish to contact us for any reason, you can reach Miss Allan by email at:

Nursery@stmarys.slough.sch.uk

If your child is absent for any reason, please log this on Studybugs.

Do not communicate with Miss Allan on Class Dojo as she will not respond. All communication with Miss Allan must be done via the class email address. Thank you.

Notice- when bringing your child to Nursery, do not park in front of the school car park gates. Access is needed at all times by staff, deliveries and visitors to the school.

If you do wish to drive to Nursery, you can find alternative free parking at Upton Court Park and then walk around to St Mary's. This would be an approximately 15 minute walk.

Thank you.

This weeks attendance:

Well done Morning Nursery! You have increased from 76.7%. Keep up the hard work :)

We are aiming for a minimum of 96% every week. It would be lovely to see our attendance percentage increase.

This week at Nursery (week beginning 8.12.2025), we are learning about the following things:

Literacy

Over this week we will be looking at the festival Christmas.

On Monday we are introducing Christmas by thinking about who celebrates Christmas. We will talk about any knowledge we already have about Christmas and then learning about it by watching 'My First Festivals: Christmas'. You can watch it with your child here: My First Festivals - Series 1: 3. Christmas - BBC iPlayer

On Tuesday we will think about why Christmas is celebrated. We will link it to our prior RE learning and talk about Jesus and his mother Mary. We will listen to a story about the birth of Jesus and discuss that Christians celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus is a special and important event in their year.

On Wednesday we will talk about how we celebrate Christmas (or another festival if we do not celebrate Christmas). During play the children will draw an image in their book about a special festival they celebrate and talk about their image.

On Thursday we will recap our learning from earlier in the week and then we will revisit writing our names. The children will continue to work on writing the letters of their name and practising using capital and lower case letters. If the children can write their first name confidently, they will begin to practice writing their surname.

Finally on Friday we will be recapping our learning from the rest of the week and looking at our rhyme of the week 'Five Little Snowmen'. With Mrs Chatterjee the children will sing the song and the actions that go with it.

Maths

In Maths we are revisiting previous learning to help consolidate skills that the children have found challenging. Over the week we will be focusing on counting, subitising and recognising 1, 2 and 3. Our key vocabulary is:

Count

Identify

Recognise

One

Two

Three

Subitise

Match

On Monday we will work on recognising the numerals 1, 2 and 3. The children will look at the numerals both in and out of order, naming them correctly with staff support and then independently.

On Tuesday we will recognising and counting with the numbers 1, 2 and 3. Once again the children will be trying to recognise them both in and out of order. Once they are able to do this more consistently, we will count actions- for example 2 jumps, 3 claps, 1 pat on the head. This supports the children in recognising that anything can be counted.

On Wednesday we will be subitising the amounts 1, 2 and 3. Subitising is when we recognise an amount without counting it. The children will be shown varying amounts of spots and be asked what they can see and how they see it. We will then match the subitised amounts to their corresponding numeral.

On Thursday we will be counting amounts 1, 2 and 3. The children will be looking a numerals 1, 2 and 3 then counting out the appropriate amount of objects. We will do this as a class so staff can support as the children found this very challenging last week. Once they have counted out the correct amount, they will place the objects with the corresponding numeral.

Finally on Friday we will be counting amounts of 1, 2 and 3 again. This time all children will be given a group of objects which they will count themselves. Once they have counted their objects, the children will take it in turns to match their group to the corresponding numeral.

To further consolidate these skills in learning play, the children will be matching counting cards to numerals and will be looking at subitising images with staff to ensure good understanding.

Our song of the week is Months of the Year: Months Of The Year Song

Phonics

In phonics we continue to work on Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds. We will complete a range of activities that support children in hearing bigger sounds from a range of areas-  environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, body percussion, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration and voice sounds.

Listening to these big sounds will help the children to differentiate between smaller sounds once we start learning individual letter sounds. When you're doing things around the house, or out and about, please talk to your children about what they can hear or the noises that things make as you do them.

If you would like to play any games that will support your child, please follow the link: PhonicsPlay - Phase 1 Resources

The website also has a good page with ways you can further support your child with phonics at homePhonicsPlay - Pre-school children

If you have any queries about our learning, please do speak to a member of the team.
