Nursery
Welcome to Nursery!
In Nursery our staff are Miss Allan (class teacher), Miss McGuinness, Mrs Kaur and Miss Dutta (teaching assistants). Mrs Chatterjee will teach Nursery every Friday.
If you wish to contact us for any reason, you can reach Miss Allan by email at:
Nursery@stmarys.slough.sch.uk
If your child is absent for any reason, please log this on Studybugs.
Do not communicate with Miss Allan on Class Dojo as she will not respond. All communication with Miss Allan must be done via the class email address. Thank you.
We are closed for half term from Monday 27th October to Friday 31st October. Nursery and school reopens on Monday 3rd November.
All families will be sent a name writing sheet so your child can practice writing their name when at home during half term. Please work with your child on writing their name so they are familiar with what their name looks like and how to form the letters of their name.
Thank you for your support with your child's learning.
This week at Nursery (week beginning 20.10.2025), we are learning about the following things:
Literacy
Over this week we are talking about the celebration of Diwali as a big event in the cultural calendar.
On Monday we will talk about what celebrations and festivals are. We will talk about other celebrations that people participate in, then focus on Diwali. To support and introduce Diwali, the children will watch My First Festivals- Diwali. You can watch it here: My First Festivals - Series 1: 2. Diwali - BBC iPlayer
On Tuesday we will continue to discuss Diwali and celebrater by wearing bright clothing and talking about what those who celebrate Diwali have done so far. Mrs Kaur and Miss Dutta will talk to the children about what Diwali looks like in their houses. We will read a story linking to Diwali to help the children further understand what happens.
On Wednesday we will then talk more about other events and celebrations. The children will talk about Christmas, Eid, Diwali, Easter, birthdays and Halloween and talk about which they celebrate with their families and what happens on those events. In their books they will draw a picture and attempt to make marks to label what their picture is.
On Thursday we will continue to work on writing our names and recognising the letters of our names. The children are being encouraged to write with a capital letter at the start of their name and lower case letters the rest of the way through.
Finally on Friday we will be recapping our learning from the rest of the week and looking at our rhyme of the week Tommy Thumb. With Mrs Chatterjee the children will sing the song and any actions that go with it.
Maths
In Maths we are continuing to work on recognising numbers, but we will develop our understanding of how to order number names. Our vocabulary is:
1
2
3
4
5
Count
More
We will work on using our fingers to represent the different amounts, knowing that as the amount of fingers change, so does the numbers. We will also practice counting actions and singing songs which order numbers (When Goldilocks went to the house of the Bears).
To further support with number recognition and ordering you can watch Numberblocks at home with your child.
One- Numberblocks - Series 1: One - BBC iPlayer
Another One- BBC iPlayer - Numberblocks - Series 1: Another One
Two- BBC iPlayer - Numberblocks - Series 1: Two
Three- BBC iPlayer - Numberblocks - Series 1: Three
One, Two, Three- BBC iPlayer - Numberblocks - Series 1: One, Two, Three!
Phonics
In phonics we continue to work on Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds. We will complete a range of activities that support children in hearing bigger sounds from a range of areas- environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, body percussion, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration and voice sounds.
Listening to these big sounds will help the children to differentiate between smaller sounds once we start learning individual letter sounds. When you're doing things around the house, or out and about, please talk to your children about what they can hear or the noises that things make as you do them.
If you would like to play any games that will support your child, please follow the link: PhonicsPlay - Phase 1 Resources
The website also has a good page with ways you can further support your child with phonics at home: PhonicsPlay - Pre-school children
If you have any queries about our learning, please do speak to a member of the team.
