Maths

Our song of the week is: Count to 15 | Counting Song | The Good and the Beautiful

This week we are learning to take and give 1, 2 and 3. We looked at this last week, but as the children found it challenging, we are looking at it again to ensure they understand how to do it.

On Monday we will be looking at taking up to 3 objects from a group. The children will take turns to count a given amount (1, 2 or 3) from a larger group of objects. We will also be recognising the numerals 1, 2 and 3.

On Tuesday we will continue to practice taking up to 3 objects from a group. The children will select 1, 2 or 3 objects from trays of varying objects and they will count their objects with 1 to 1 correspondence.

On Wednesday we will be giving others up to 2 objects. This is what the children found most challenging last week. All children will be given counting objects and will work in small groups with adults. The children will be asked to give either 1 or 2 objects to the adult, and we will be working on either subitising or counting the amount.

On Thursday we will be giving others up to 3 objects. The children will be given counting objects and they will be giving them to toys in the middle of the carpet area. The children will need to count either 1, 2 or 3 objects and give them to a toy. As a class we will then practise counting with 1 to 1 correspondence.

Finally on Friday the children will be counting up to 3. They will recap and discuss what they have been doing over the week. They will then watch a story which will support them in counting objects being given to a character. The story we will watch is Postman Bear by Julia Donaldson. You can watch it with your child here: Tales From Acorn Wood: Postman Bear (Share a Story Corner)

Please talk to your child about our learning to help consolidate what we are doing.
