Phonics

Read, Write Inc.

We use the Read Write Inc scheme for Phonics. Read Write Inc Phonics is a proven synthetic phonics programme that ensures early success in reading, writing and spelling.

The scheme is introduced to children in Nursery in the Summer Term.

In Nursery, we focus on using songs, rhythm and rhyme and introducing children to Fred talk to develop the skills to orally blend sounds.

These three things make the biggest difference to reduce the language gap:

1. Reading aloud

2. Teaching children poems and songs

3. Talking with children

Nursery children rely on read-a-lot, talk-a-lot, and sing-a-lot nurseries!

Fred Talk

It is vital that schools use lots and lots of oral Fred Talk in Nursery. This is where we say words in sounds ad encourage children to work out what is being said. For example ‘Can you touch your l-i-p (lip)’. Fred the frog is the Caterpillar’s best friend! Fred can only talk in sounds and they have to work out the words he is saying.
